Yoga Shed Spotlight – Janice Spencer

Janice in a restful pose, laying over a bolster on her side to open the side bodyWhat first brought you to the Yoga Shed, and how has your yoga practice grown or changed since you started coming?

I have tried yoga at the Y and using videos and I have incorporated some kind of stretching in my hour and an half, before work, home exercise routine for forty years. But I never had guidance.

Martha Scott told me about your alignment focus and once I was retired and after Covid I gave it a try out by the airport. At first I experienced some minor muscle soreness, like my butt, a good thing. The more I returned the less I noticed the soreness and eventually it stopped happening, also a good thing. I feel in your Level Two class that I am always challenged. The variety is stimulating and I feel the benefit long after the class ends.

2. How does practicing Yoga at the Yoga Shed support your life off the mat?

I use the techniques I learn in my practice at the gym three days a week. I feel stronger doing my gardening and more flexible in every physical move I make. By incorporating Iyengar yoga, Tai Chi, Pilates and some aerobics along with a healthy vegan, gluten free and refined sugar free diet, I FEEL GREAT ALL THE TIME!

3. Please share with us a favorite moment, an asana that you’ve managed to perform, or insight that you’ve gleaned from practice with us.

That would have to be inversion, headstand in particular. The first time you called for it I was like a deer in the headlights, oh no, not me! You gave me the props and guidance I needed to overcome my mortal fear. After about six months of practicing a headstand once a week in your class I found myself wanting to do it in my gym practice. I did and continue three or four times a week. I have a long way to go but at 72 years of age, I am thrilled with this lifetime achievement.

I also want to add that you, Ella, have made a positive impact on my life. You are always welcoming. Your love simply radiates from you. You always listen to my comments and give me valuable feedback. You are among a very short list of the best people I know, always there to help, support, encourage and love. You my dear are a very special person.

If just one person is inspired by my journey I will be grateful.
