Our neck and shoulders are a common source of tension for many, and poor posture can contribute to pain and discomfort. Our shoulders and neck are also some of the most mobile parts in our body, often requiring stability and strength to prevent injury. As a rock climber, surfer and generally highly active person I am constantly focusing on neck and shoulder health. I’ve also dealt with neck pain for years, resulting from a whiplash injury and have personal experience with using yoga to move from a place of pain to one of health.

In this class you can expect to focus on:

  • Correct alignment of the spine
  • Chest opening postures, with and without support. These help to create better posture and more correct breathing. It will also help to reduce neck and back pain.
  • Flexibility of the shoulders, to create and maintain a healthy range of motion. We will incorporate use of the yoga wall (slings and ropes) often.
  • Strength of the shoulder girdle, including the chest, upper back and arms.

When the body is “out of alignment”, the weight of the body is no longer supported by the bones. Coupled with the force of gravity pulling us downward, the weight of the body can cause severe unnatural stress to the muscular-skeletal system. Many aches, pains and injuries stem from an already tight, misaligned body. With the body in this state, it doesn’t take much more stress to cause more pain or to seriously injure oneself.

The benefits of Precision Alignment Yoga are many. Bringing the body into alignment allows the body to work as it was designed: To help support the skeletal system so that we may move freely and effortlessly. With an aligned structure, the organs also have the space and freedom to function properly. And then from this point, the systems of the body have the opportunity to work as they were designed.
